DESIGNED FOR BUSINESSES, SCHOOLS, COLLEGES, CONFERENCES, COMMUNITIES AND LIVE VENUES, OTBL ENTERTAINS, CHALLENGES AND CONNECTS PEOPLE IN A WAY THEY WON'T SOON FORGET.
BECAUSE UNDERSTANDING DIFFERENT MINDS SHOULD BE ANYTHING BUT ORDINARY.
THIS ISN'T A PRESENTATION. IT'S AN EXPERIENCE.
Outside The Box LIVE! isn't a presentation where an audience sits quietly while someone talks at them. It is an energetic, interactive live experience designed to get people thinking, laughing, participating and, most importantly, communicating. Hosted by Jim Gaffney and featuring his son Shane, the show combines lived experience, original music from The Autistic Mile, comedy, characters, audience participation, interactive gaming and more than five decades of perspective on autism and the changing world around it. Jim brings an unusually broad perspective to that conversation. He is a late diagnosed autistic adult, the father of an autistic adult, a professional who spent more than 25 years in corporate America, and currently works at Jacksonville School for Autism. But Outside The Box LIVE! isn't simply Jim standing on a stage telling his story. Jim brings different moments from that story to life through characters, music and humor, taking the audience through a chronological journey that demonstrates how autism, awareness, expectations and opportunities have changed during his lifetime. Along the way, the audience becomes part of the experience. They answer questions. They participate in challenges. They meet the characters. They hear the music. They laugh. They communicate with one another. And sometimes they may find themselves a little outside their own comfort zones. Whether the audience consists of employees, educators, students, families, professionals or members of a community, the underlying message remains the same: Understanding begins when people are willing to communicate, listen and experience the world from another perspective.
YOU'RE NOT JUST WATCHING THE SHOW
From the opening moments of Outside The Box LIVE!, the audience becomes part of the experience. Jim may ask hundreds of people to stand, turn to someone they don't know and introduce themselves. It seems simple, but it establishes one of the central themes of the entire show: communication matters. From there, almost anything can happen. Audience members participate in interactive questions and games throughout the program, providing real time feedback while discovering statistics and information about autism, communication and neurodiversity. Volunteers may find themselves onstage with Jim. Music becomes interactive. Communication gets challenged. Expectations occasionally get turned upside down. At one point, Jim moves directly into the audience for a powerful visual demonstration of just how far the impact of autism reaches. Audience members who are personally connected to autism through themselves, a family member, friend, classmate, coworker or someone else in their lives are invited to stand. Then the circle expands. The result can transform statistics on a screen into something much more powerful: a room full of people suddenly seeing how connected they already are. Audience members can also submit questions during the show for a special segment where Jim opens the conversation and answers questions about autism, his experiences and the subjects explored throughout the program. Some moments are funny. Some are challenging. Some are personal. All of them are designed to keep the audience involved rather than simply watching from their seats.
MUSIC TELLS PART OF THE STORY
Music isn't background entertainment in Outside The Box LIVE! It is part of the storytelling. Original music from The Autistic Mile is woven throughout the show, helping Jim tell stories that sometimes aren't easily explained through words alone. The experience begins with County Line, a song about living between different worlds and trying to understand where you belong. As Jim's story progresses through different periods of his life, additional songs help connect those experiences to universal themes of identity, belonging, communication, relationships and acceptance. And the audience doesn't always get to simply listen. Volunteers may join Jim during musical segments, and by the end of the show the entire audience is invited to become part of the music. The final song, Every Mile Matters, brings the room together for an audience sing along built around the idea at the heart of The Autistic Mile: our journeys may be different, but every one of them matters. Music. Comedy. Characters. Stories. Games. Questions. Participation. The format constantly changes because the audience's attention shouldn't have to survive a presentation. Outside The Box LIVE! should earn it.
DIFFERENT MINDS. SHARED WORLD.
The final chapter of Outside The Box LIVE! brings everything back to something bigger than autism. Relationships. Neurodivergent and neurotypical people share workplaces, classrooms, campuses, homes, families, friendships and communities. We don't live in separate worlds, even when it sometimes feels as though we experience the same world very differently. That makes communication everyone's responsibility. Outside The Box LIVE! doesn't ask one group to change for another. It asks what becomes possible when all of us become more curious about how other people communicate, process information, respond to uncertainty and experience the world around them. For businesses, that conversation can change workplaces. For schools, it can change classrooms. For colleges and universities, it can change campuses. For families and communities, it can change relationships. And for an audience sitting together in a theater, auditorium, conference center or performing arts venue, it can begin with something as simple as turning to the person beside you and starting a conversation. The goal is for people to leave Outside The Box LIVE! entertained, energized, informed and perhaps looking at someone in their life a little differently than they did when they walked in. Different minds bring different perspectives. Different perspectives create new possibilities. And there is always more room Outside The Box.
ONE SHOW. MANY AUDIENCES.
OUTSIDE THE BOX LIVE! CAN MEET YOUR AUDIENCE WHERE THEY ARE. Outside The Box LIVE! is designed to adapt to the people in the room. A corporate audience may explore communication, collaboration, workplace relationships and neuroinclusive employment. A school audience may focus on understanding differences, communication, belonging, relationships and acceptance. A college or university audience can explore independence, identity, social expectations, transition, employment and building communities where different minds can thrive. Conferences and professional organizations can use the experience to challenge conventional thinking about autism, neurodiversity, communication and inclusion. And public performances bring all of those conversations together for families, professionals, educators, autistic and neurodivergent individuals, employers, students and members of the community. The setting may change. The audience may change. The conversation may change. The experience remains Outside The Box.
